NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team dropped their first conference match of the season against the University of New Orleans in five sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Privateers scored four straight points to take the lead early on in set one while the Cardinals struggled to get their attack going. Unable to catch up, UIW suffered a 25-15 opening set defeat.

The Cardinals found a rhythm in set two. The squad produced 12 kills and four errors to be more efficient over the Privateers who registered 17 kills and 10 errors for a 26-24 victory.

UIW found a lead and maintained it through much of the third set. While UNO attempted to make a comeback, the Cardinals finished strong and closed the set 25-22.

After two straight set wins by UIW, the Privateers returned to set four and tallied 18 kills and four errors to top the 10 kills made by the Cardinals.

Set five was a battle for both teams as they each had their turn at taking the lead. In the end, UNO held on to win the final set of the match 15-12.

LEADERS

Cameron Edwards led the team with 16 kills and a .317 attacking percentage. Autumn Lockley contributed 14 kills and nine digs. Madison Williams tallied 45 assists and 12 digs. Defensively, Sarea Alexander registered six blocks while Madelynn Miller paced the team with 19 digs.

Kyra Hunter and Lane Hindenburg both had 18 kills for the Privateers.

UP NEXT

Volleyball will have its first home match of the season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Cardinals will play the defending Conference Champions in the McDermott Convocation Center on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. 

STAY TUNED

The Cardinals will return to the McDermott Convocation Center to host McNeese on Thursday, Sept. 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
