Cardinals Route Islanders 17-7 on Senior Day

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Kyle Bergeron's five-RBI game led the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team to a 17-7 routing of Texas A&M Corpus Christi in game three of the Southland Conference series on Sunday, in the last game of the season at Sullivan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cardinals (20-32, 8-19 SLC) gave up an early run on mothers' day Sunday, but responded with a big six run inning and never looked back. Bergeron's huge day at the plate helped UIW 10-run rule the Islanders (19-32, 11-16 SLC). He was a double shy of the cycle and drove in five runs.

UIW used RBI's from Bergeron, Kyler Genenbacher, Ray Swyers and Bryce Shepherd in the first inning to take a 6-1 lead. After the Islanders cut the lead to 6-2 in the second, Bergeron homered to left field in the bottom half of the second, and then used a Shepherd double and a Sean Arnold single to make it 9-2.

Senior Garret Cooper started for UIW and pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one earned (one unearned) on two hits and struck out one. Once the Islanders got to the Cardinal bullpen, the Islanders made it a close ballgame. They scored four runs in the fifth to cut the lead down to just 9-6. But, UIW once again responded with a big six-run inning to put the game away. David Anaya singled in two runs, and Bergeron barely missed a grand slam that hit off the top of the wall for a bases-clearing triple to make it 15-6.

The Cardinals went on to score a run in the sixth, and then needing one run in the seventh to end the game on a run-rule, Swyers came up with two outs and the winning run on third base. Swyers hit the 0-1 pitch to center field to drive in the winning run.

Ramon Salazar picked up the win after tossing 1.1 innings in relief and only allowing one run on one hit. Lance Moszkowicz pitched a scoreless seventh, with no hits and one strike out.

Islander starter, David Worrell got tabbed with the loss after allowing five runs in just one third of an inning.

 LEADERS

Bergeron led the way with four hits, four runs and five RBI. He had a homer, a triple and two singles. Senior Bryce Shepherd had a terrific game as well. He had three hits, two runs and three RBI. Swyers added two hits, two runs and three RBI, while Mark Whitehead was 1-for-1 with a run, an RBI and three walks.

For the Islanders, Luke Marbach had two hits, including a solo homer in the first inning, two runs scored and an RBI. Cullen Jozwiak had two hits and three RBI.
