AUSTIN–
David Anaya homered, but it wasn't enough, as the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell short 10-3 in Austin in a non-conference matchup against Texas on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Anaya got the Cardinals (20-33) on the board early with a solo homerun to left field to take a 1-0 lead. But, the Longhorns (32-19) responded right away with a run of their own, and then grabbed a 5-1 lead with a four-run second inning. Michael Cantu hit a two-run homer, and Kacy Clemens later drove in two more with a single to right field.
Texas added two more in the third inning to go ahead 7-1, but the Cardinals cut the lead to 7-3 in the fifth.
Sean Arnold continued his hot hitting and drove in
Nico Garza with a single to right field, and Anaya followed with an RBI-double to left field.
The Longhorns then put it away with a two-run homer from Patrick Mathis, and a sac fly from Zane Gurwitz in the eighth.
LEADERS
Anaya paced the Cardinals with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. He hit a double and a homerun in the loss.
Nico Garza had a 1-for-3 night and added a run, while Whitehead collected a hit and scored a run.
Tyler Miller got tabbed with the loss. Three Cardinal relievers came in and three a scoreless inning each.
Ramon Salazar,
Jenner Jackson, and
Cody Allen combined to keep the Longhorns off the board for three innings.
For UT, Mathis and Clemens each collected three hits and drove in three runs. Cantu had two RBI, and Bret Boswell was 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI, and two walks.
Nick Kendal started for the Longhorns and picked up the win after tossing four innings and allowing one run and striking out four.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will close out the season with a three-game conference set in Huntsville, Texas against Sam Houston State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Friday at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m.
