Islanders Hold on for 10-7 Victory Over Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team attempted a late rally on Saturday, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held on for a 10-7 victory at Sullivan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Islanders (18-31, 10-15 SLC) took advantage of early pitching miscues by the Cardinals (19-31, 7-18 SLC) to get on the board in the second inning. A&M-Corpus Christi drew a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with just one out. The Islanders drove in their first run on a sacrifice fly, before a single resulted in a 2-0 lead for A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Islanders added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to grab a 5-0 advantage.

UIW broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when Mark Whitehead reached on an error and scored from first on a Sean Arnold double off the wall in left center. After a single from David Anaya, Lee Thomas crushed a double to the right field wall, sending Arnold home.

The Cardinals continued to chip away at the lead in the seventh when Kyle Bergeron doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a Sam Gutierrez ground out and scored on a Bryce Shepherd sac fly.

A&M-Corpus Christi capitalized on an eighth-inning error by UIW to score one, before exploding for four additional runs in the ninth.

The Cardinals used five singles to drive in four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, but UIW was unable to climb all the way back.

LEADERS

Arnold paced the Cardinals offense with a 2-for-5 outing, two runs and two RBIs. Shepherd turned in a 1-for-3 effort with two RBIs and a run scored. Anaya and Thomas each finished 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Whitehead hit 1-for-5 and scored twice.

Jackson Owens led the Islanders offense with a 3-for-5 performance, two runs and two RBIs.

Bernie Martinez (3-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with four walks through six innings on the mound.

Devin Skapura (3-4) earned the win, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits through 6 2/3 innings of work.

Chris Cooper picked up his seventh save of the season, despite yielding four runs on five hits in just 1 1/3 innings.
