OREM, Utah – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team split a doubleheader against Utah Valley, taking the first one 6-4, and losing the second one 5-0 on Friday evening at Brent Brown Ballpark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In game one, the Cardinals (15-17, 4-8 SLC) took an early 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out,
Kyler Genenbacher singled in a run, and
Sean Arnold then walked in another, and UIW would never look back.
John Shull earned his third win of the season after putting up some zeros on the board. He allowed three earned runs (one unearned) in six innings of work, walked two and struck out three.
The offense helped him out as well, scoring four more runs. After Utah Valley's (10-19) Zac Miller cut the lead to 3-2 with a homer in the fifth, UIW responded with two more runs. Arnold singled in his second run of the game, and Genenbacher also came in to score on an error. With a slight 5-4 lead in the eighth, UIW added an insurance run on a
Mark Whitehead RBI-single to centerfield.
The Cardinal bullpen played a huge part in game one.
Ramon Salazar came in relief and threw two scoreless innings, and struck out three, and closer
Lance Moszkowicz followed with a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.
In game two, the Cardinals ran into Jake Mayer. He masterfully went through the Cardinals' lineup only allowing three hits in his first complete game shutout of the season. He only walked one Cardinal and struck out seven. In his gem, the Wolverines' offense supplied all the run support he would need. Jake Berry opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo homerun, and Utah Valley went on to add four more runs on 11 hits.
Bernie Martinez fought well, but picked up his second straight loss after starting the season 3-0. He allowed four runs in seven innings, walking two and striking out five. Mayer moved to 2-6 on the season with the win.

In game one,
Garrett Terrell led the way with a three-hit game, a hit by pitch and an RBI. Arnold had two RBI and two walks, while Whitehead had a pair of singles and his 15
th stolen base of the season.
Nico Garza had a hit and scored two runs.
The Wolverines' Trevor Howell and Willis each collected three hits in the game.
