Box Score 2 RUSTON, LA – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team picked up their first victory of the 2017 season on Saturday evening in the Louisiana Tech Invitational. In the first game of the day, UIW (1-3, 0-0) dropped another one run game, as they were defeated 2-1 by North Dakota. However, in the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Cardinals were able to secure their first victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Samford.
NORTH DAKOTA EDGES OUT UIW
Jessica Rodriguez started in the pitching circle for the Cardinals against North Dakota in the opening game of the day and she pitched well only allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in five innings of work.
The cardinals jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning after
Lacie Stevens singled up the middle scoring
Alex Alonzo. The Fighting Hawks answered in the bottom on the second when Rachael Waynick singled up the middle scoring Autumn Cervantez to tie the game at 1-1. The score would remain 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Waynick once again singled up the middle to give North Dakota a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals were unable to respond in the top of the seventh inning giving the Fighting Hawks their first victory of the season.
UIW finished the game with four hits as a team and two errors. Stevens had the only RBI for the Cardinals and
Victoria Bratcher and
Marcela Lopez also had a hit for the Cardinals.
Kaylin Vandomelen pitched a complete game for the Fighting Hawks going 7 innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven batters. Waynick led North Dakota offensively with three hits and two RBI.
CARDINALS GET FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON
After starting the Louisiana Tech Invitational with three losses, UIW was able to get their first victory of the season in a close game against Samford.
Joanna Valencia pitched a wonderful game for the Cardinals going the full seven innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, UIW responded with three runs in the top of the third highlighted by an RBI single down the left field line by
Bailey Thomas that scored Stevens.
That would be enough offense to push the Cardinals to the victory over the Bulldogs in the fourth game of the season.
Hailee Alaniz,
Mikaela Flores, and Stevens scored runs for the Cardinals and
Kellen Robles also picked up an RBI.
For the game, UIW had four hits and two errors while Samford could not over come three errors committed in the game.
