Softball Held Scoreless in Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of Incarnate Word softball team struggled offensively in Friday's doubleheader against Southland Conference opponent Southeastern Louisiana. The Cardinals were shutout in both games at Cardinals Field as the Lions were able to win both games by the score of 2-0.

Sarah Leal (Kyle/Hays HS) made her fifth start of the season in the first game and she pitched very well going the full seven innings only allowing two earned runs on six hits. Leal had no run support as the Cardinals failed to score for the sixth time this season. UIW had opportunities in the game, but they could not come up with the clutch hit to jump on the scoreboard.

The Lions (16-12, 2-3) scored their first run of the game in the top of the first inning after Amber Sather hit a sacrifice fly in shallow center that scored Katie Lacour. The only other run of the game was scored in the fifth inning when Lacour singled down the leftfield line scoring Carlie Whittington.

The Cardinals (10-16, 2-3) had eight hits for the ballgame, but the team left 10 runners on base. Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) led the team at the plate with three of the Cardinals eight hits from the leadoff spot.  For Southeastern Louisiana, Caitlyn Van Hemelryck picked up her third victory of the season in the pitching circle going 4.2 innings allowing eight hits and no runs.

The second game of the day was almost a carbon copy of the first. The Cardinals were only able to manage three hits for the game all of which came from Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS).  Bridget Stein (Brenham/Brenham HS) made the start in the pitching circle for UIW and much like Leal, she pitched well, but the offense could not score any runs.  Stein also went the full seven innings giving up just one earned run on five hits.

The Lions scored the first run of the game in the third inning after Jaquelyn Ramon stole third and then scored on a throwing error.  Southeastern Louisiana would add another run in the fifth after Lacour tripled to center to score Ramon.  Madison Vige' got the win for the Lions after going seven innings allowing no runs on three hits.
The final game of the series will take place on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Cardinals Field as UIW will try and avoid the series sweep.
