Softball Swept by Lions

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of Incarnate Word softball team was once again not able to come up with key hits in clutch situations as Southeastern Louisiana (17-12, 3-3) swept the series after winning 4-2 on Saturday at Cardinals Field.

The Cardinals (10-17, 2-4) started the game strong by scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning after Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) was able to drive in Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) with an RBI single. UIW would add another run in the bottom of the fifth innings on a solo homerun from Flores to take a 2-0 lead.  However, the Lions were able to score two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game and they would add two more runs in the seventh to take a 4-2 advantage and that would end up being the final score.

Bridget Stein (Brenham/Brenham HS) made the start in the pitching circle for UIW and she went 5.2 innings giving up two earned runs on five hits while also striking out three batters. Sarah Leal (Kyle/Hays HS) replaced Stein in the pitching circle with two outs in the sixth inning and she would end up taking the loss after giving up two unearned runs in the seventh inning.  Taylor Bishop was the pitcher of record for the Lions picking up her ninth victory of the season.  Bishop entered the game after just two batters and she went seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits.

Flores led the Cardinals at the plate with both of the team's RBI's to go along with two hits including the homerun.  Ramirez collected three of the team's nine hits while also scoring a run.  Victoria Bratcher (Colleyville/Colleyville Heritage HS) went 2-for-2 and Bridget Gauvin (Winnipeg, Can./College Louis-Riel) had a double for the game.  The Lions were led by Grace DeLee, Amber Sather and Mychal Truxillo who each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Cardinals will return to action on Thursday against Texas State starting at 6:00 P.M. in San Marcos before heading to Lamar for a three-game series next weekend.
