SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – Junior
Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) cracked a pair of 3-run homers as the University of Incarnate Word softball team snapped a three game losing streak on Wednesday evening by defeating Texas State University, 9-4 in extra innings.
Alonzo drove in a career high six runs as she had her second two homerun game of the season. Alonzo's three run shot to right field opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning to give the Cardinals (11-17) a 3-0 lead. The Bobcats (21-10) scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Kendall Wiley that would force the game into extra innings.
The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the eighth inning after
Christy Trevino (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) singled through the right side scoring
Marissa Ruiz (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) making the score, 4-3. Texas State would not go down quietly as they would answer with an RBI single up the middle by Taylor Webb to force the ballgame into the ninth inning.
Alonzo would once again be the hero for the Cardinals after she hit another three run home run in the top of the ninth inning to left field giving the Cardinals a 7-4 lead. UIW would go on to add two more runs in the inning when
Natali Duron (Pasadena/Memorial HS) doubled to left center scoring
Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) and Duron would later score on a wild pitch making the final score 9-4.
Bridget Stein (Brenham/Brenham HS) had a great performance in the pitching circle after she went 7.2 innings giving up one unearned run on four hits. Stein was replaced in the pitching circle by Kristen Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) in the fifth inning, but would later return in extra innings to finish the contest and pick up her fifth win of the season. Quincy Charleston took the loss for the Bobcats after going 4.0 innings while giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
At the plate, UIW had 12 hits as a team and Alonzo went 3-for-4 with the two home runs. Duron went 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and she also drove in a run.
