CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word basketball teams travel to Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. The women's game starts at 4 p.m. and the men's game is at 7 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The UIW will try to bounce back from a heart-breaking 62-61 loss on Thursday night against Houston Baptist. The Cardinals (6-18, 3-10) have struggled in close games this year going 2-9 in games decided by 10 points or less. They have a chance to even their season series with the Islanders after suffering a 57-56 loss at home on January 27.
The Cardinals are averaging 57.6 points per game and give up 64.0 points per game. They are holding opponents to 29.5 percent shooting from three-point range.
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) leads the team with 13.1 points per game while
Brianna Williams (Wylie/Mesquite HS) chips in with 12.0 points per game.
Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 47.6 percent from the field.
The Islanders (8-17, 5-9) are scoring 59.6 points per game and giving up 65.4 points per game. Brittany Mbamalu leads the team with 10.5 points per game and 70 three-pointers while shooting over 40 percent from three-point range.
The UIW men enter the game in fifth place in the Southland standings at 8-4, but are nipping at the heels at three of the teams in front of them. They are 13-10 overall and average 72.2 points per game and they allow 71.7 points per game. The Cardinals won the first meeting against the Islanders (19-6, 10-3), 70-65 at home.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) leads the Cardinals with 14.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game and he has made 49 three-pointers.
Derail Green (Houston/Klein Forest HS) and
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) are each scoring 12 points per game. Walker leads the nation in free throw percentage, 93.5 percent.
A&M-Corpus Christi sits in second place in the conference. They are led by power forward Rashawn Thomas who is averaging 17.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. They have three other players scoring at least 10 points per game, including Hameed Ali who leads the league in assists, 141 and steals, 71.
