SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team won a back-and-forth match on Friday afternoon against visiting South Dakota State University, 4-3 at the Mabry Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (1-3) fell behind 1-0 after doubles play. The Jackrabbits' (2-4) #1 and #3 teams each defeated their UIW counterparts.
Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and
Sarah Savedra (El Paso/El Paso HS) teamed up for a win at #2 doubles, 6-1.
UIW quickly reclaimed the lead when Strahl and
Maria Batchinsky (San Antonio/Alamo Heights HS) quickly dispatched their foes at #4 and #6 in straight sets. However, SDSU reclaimed the lead after a straight sets win from Tacy Haws-Lay at #3 and a three-set victory for Iasmin Rosa at #1 made it 3-2 with two matches remaining.
Savedra was able to even the score for the Cardinals when she knocked off Morgan Brower, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to set the stage for the final match of the day at #2 singles.
Matea Zemunik (Jesenice, Croatia/Marko Marulic) took the first set 6-3 over Ffion Davis, but then dropped the second set by the same score. In the third set she regained her composure and easily won, 6-2 to clinch the first win of the season for UIW.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday for a pair of matches. They open with Texas State at 11 a.m. and then follow that with a 3:30 p.m. match against St. Mary's.
