UIW Plays St. Edward’s Tuesday in Home Opener

Tuesday game begins a three-game home stand for the Cardinals

San Antonio, Texas – Fresh off a hard-fought 78-73 loss at No. 21 Texas to start the 2016-17 season, the UIW men's basketball team opens a three-game home stand beginning Tuesday against St. Edward's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the McDermott Convocation Center. The game will be broadcast live on Spectrum Sports Network with Tom Franklin on the call. Spectrum Sports can be found on channel 323 in San Antonio. Outside of San Antonio, the game will be shown on ESPN3.
 
OPENING TIP
 
UIW has won nine straight home openers. The McDermott Convocation Center has been kind to the Cardinals, as they are 308-121 (.718). UIW is 36-20 all-time against St. Edward's, with the last meeting being an 85-68 Cardinal win on December 4, 2014. Tuesday's game will count as an exhibition for St. Edward's, who competes in Division II's Heartland Conference.

Summary: St. Edward's played at the Heartland/Rocky Mountain Conference Tip-off in Dallas over the weekend and split its two games. The Hilltoppers lost in overtime to Colorado Christian, 93-91, and rebounded against Colorado Mesa, 71-66.
 
On the season, four Hilltoppers average double digits in scoring, led by Ramir Burton with 17.0 points per game, followed by Ethan Gillbert (14.0), John Gramlich (13.5), and Sean Watkins (10.5). Cory McKendree is the big man in the paint, as he leads the team in shooting percentage (70.0), rebounding (6.6 rebounds per game), and blocked shots (4). St. Edward's is shooting 42.9 percent from the floor compared to 48.3 for its opponents.

Summary: UIW gave No. 21 Texas all it could handle in a 78-73 loss to the Longhorns Friday in the season opener for both teams. Down by as many as 18, the Cardinals used a 20-7 run in a span of six minutes to cut the deficit. Sam Burmeister hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 2:33 remaining in regulation to put the visitors up one, but Texas scored eight straight points for a 74-67 lead with 21 seconds remaining.
 
Shawn Johnson scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, as he shot 7-of-14 from the floor, 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and made all six of his free throws. Burmeister chipped in with 12 points.
 
The 24 points for Johnson were the most in a season opener since senior forward Dionelle Rucker dropped 28 in an 80-77 win over UT-Permian Basin on November 9, 2012.

UIW is off until hosting Howard Payne on Monday, November 21 at 7 p.m. That game will also be televised live on Spectrum Sports Texas.
