SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team beat sister school, Centro Universitario Incarnate Word from Mexico City 8-0 in an exhibition game, after a two-hour lightning and rain delay on Friday at Benson Stadium.
The Cardinals pressed and kept possession for most of the game. They created many opportunities on the offensive side and played tough defense to shut out the Mexican Cardinals.
UIW opened the score in the sixth minute when
Jonathan Camarena's shot was saved and deflected off the cross bar and
Ben Conway was there to grab the rebound and score.
Then in the 38
th minute,
Alfredo Zendejas hit a hard low cross into the box that found
Callum Wright who was able to finish for the second goal. Just 40 seconds later,
O'Neal Moore stole the ball in CIW's box and took a shot that found the back of the net to make the score 3-0 to go into halftime.
The second half was all UIW as they were able to keep possession and benefit from four penalty kicks in the half.
Robert Pratt,
Carlos Guerrero,
Michael Forbes and
Andrew Grossman all scored on penalty kicks.
Ryan Osborne's goal in the 53
rd minute was the only non-penalty kick goal of the half.
Before the game, the UIW team walked out with different members of the faculty and staff from the University to recognize them and their efforts for the school. In total, there were 23 members recognized Friday night.
The Cardinals will play another exhibition match Sunday, when they host the UIW alumni at 5:00 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
