PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team travels to Prairie View A&M on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
The Cardinals (6-29) started the season by winning just three of their first 30 games, but they went 3-2 last week and are now on a two-game winning streak. Leading the way for the team is senior
Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) who is on a 13-game hitting streak and went 12-for-19 at the plate last week. She is hitting .367 for the season and also leads the team with 20 runs scored and eight stolen bases.
Overall, the UIW is hitting .235 and scoring a little under three runs per game. Sophomore
Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) has been the top run producer for the team with 15 RBI's and a .308 batting average. Sophomore
Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) leads the pitching staff with a 4-13 record and a 4.30 earned run average. She has 44 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 112.1 innings.
The Panthers (5-17) are averaging four runs per game and hitting .280 as a team, but opponents are hitting .377 against them. Jazmine Hicks leads the team with a .386 batting average, six doubles, 13 RBI's and eight stolen bases. Destinee Williams is also having a strong year at the plate with a .358 batting average, two homers and nine driven in. The team does not have a staff ace and have had five different pitchers start games this year. Overall, they have an 8.55 earned run average.
The Cardinals will return home this weekend for a three-game series against Southland Conference rival Nicholls State University.
