SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team will host Abilene Christian University in a three-game Southland Conference series this weekend. They begin with a double header on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and round the series off on Saturday at noon.
The Cardinals (4-28, 0-12) have yet to win a conference match-up and will be heading into the game coming off of a close 1-0 loss to Texas State on Wednesday night. Earlier this week UIW, won their first game since February 28, defeating Texas Southern, 6-1 at Cardinals Field.
Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) is leading the Cardinals at the plate with a batting average of .329 and a .429 slugging percentage. She also leads the team with 16 runs and eight stolen bases.
Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) has been one of the Cardinals most productive batters with an average of .271 and 11 RBI's. The pitching staff for UIW has been led by Kristen Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) who is 2-13 with a 4.59 earned run average.
The Wildcats (6-24, 2-10) have had a similar season to the Cardinals, yet last weekend they broke a five game losing streak with a win against McNeese State in a conference match-up. As a team they are hitting .272 and are scoring an average of 4.3 runs per game. Peyton Hedrick leads the offense with an impressive .452 average, nine doubles, six home runs and 25 RBI's. Emily Seidel has been the top pitcher for ACU with a 6.00 ERA and 3-18 record.
