HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team takes one of their shortest road trips of the season this weekend when they travel to Southland Conference rival Houston Baptist for a three-game series that starts with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m.
The Cardinals (3-23, 0-9) and the Huskies (6-19, 0-9) are each looking for their first conference victory of the season. UIW is hitting .238 as a team and are scoring three runs per game.
Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) has been the team's most productive hitter with a .313 batting average, .404 on-base percentage and team high 11 runs batted in.
Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) has been hitting lead-off in recent weeks and has a team high 13 runs and six stolen bases.
Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) has been the top pitcher on the team with a 2-10 record and a 4.97 earned run average. She has 28 strikeouts and 16 walks in 81.2 innings.
The Huskies are hitting .271 as a team and have four regulars hitting over .300 on the year. Nicole Shedd leads the team with a .352 average and a .620 slugging percentage along with 14 RBI's. Melissa Herman is hitting .313 with a .435 on-base percentage thanks to a team high 16 walks. Laci Belovsky has been the best pitcher on the team with a 4-7 record and a 5.27 ERA in 74.1 innings.
The Huskies hold a 40-18 all-time record against the Cardinals, but this will be the first meeting between the two teams with each being a member of NCAA Division I.
