Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lamar Slows Down UIW Women

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Visiting Lamar University played a stifling brand of defense against the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team on Saturday night in a 67-45 Southland Conference win at the McDermott Center.

Lamar (13-10, 10-2) held UIW (5-16, 2-8) to just 28.3 percent shooting from the field and forced them into 21 turnovers as they held on to first place in the conference in a game seen on ESPN 3.  On offense, LU used a dominating inside attack to control the game as they outscored UIW, 40-16 on points in the paint.

The game began slowly for both teams as the defenses made scoring tough.  Lamar led 14-7 more than midway through the half.  LU shut down the UIW offense over the final 4:37 of the half by not allowing a point and took a healthy 12-point lead into halftime.

The second half was nearly a carbon copy of the first as UIW struggled to keep it close.  Lamar eventually pulled away and led by 20 points for most of the final 11 minutes of the game.
UIW was 15-of-53 from the field, made 4-of-9 from three-point range and were 11-of-15 at the charity stripe.  Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) led the team with 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) added eight points and dished out four assists.  Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) contributed five steals and two blocks while Alyssa Ward (Palmetto, FL/Palmetto HS) chipped in with seven points and eight boards off the bench.

Lamar shot 45.8 percent from the field, made 6-of-21 from three-point range and was 7-for-10 at the foul line.  Kiandra Bowers made five of her first six shots and finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals.  Dominique Edwards posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Baileigh O'Dell added 11 points and five assists.

The Cardinals are back in action on February 12 at home against Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m.
