SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team hung close with Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night for a while, but they fell to the visitors, 64-47 at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals (5-17, 2-9) held an early lead and were pesky all night long, but in the end their 32.8 percent shooting from the field was too much to overcome. The Lady Jacks (16-6, 9-2) only led 30-26 at halftime, but opened the second half on an 11-2 run. They were able to push the lead to 18 points after a conventional three-point play by Tiernay Henderson with 9:17 remaining in the game. UIW would never get closer than 13 points the rest of the game.
The Lady Jacks controlled the paint area in the Southland Conference matchup. They outscored the Cardinals, 38-22 on points in the paint and blocked eight shots. In the second half, they held UIW to just 25.8 percent shooting from the field.
The Cardinals went 20-of-61 from the field, made 3-of-11 from three-point range and were 4-for-6 at the foul line.
Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) led the team with 10 points and 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) had eight points, six assists and four rebounds while
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) grabbed eight rebounds.
The Lady Jacks shot 44.1 percent from the field, made 4-of-21 from three-point range and were 8-of-14 at the charity stripe. Porsha Roberts led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds. Henderson added 10 points, four blocks, four assists and four steals. Taylor Ross chipped in with 12 points while Brittney Matthew dished out six assists.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Southland rival Central Arkansas.
