CONWAY, ARKANSAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team nearly pulled off an impressive upset on Sunday afternoon at Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas. The Sugar Bears (14-10, 7-5) held on for a 58-49 win at the Farris Center.
The game was close throughout and included seven ties taking up nearly 10 minutes of the contest. The Cardinals (5-18, 2-10) trailed 42-40 after a free throw by
Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) with 5:07 remaining in the game. UIW made a two-point game two more times in the game, including with 1:52 to play after a three-pointer by
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS).
Alyssa Ward (Palmetto, FL/Palmetto HS) picked up a steal for UIW on the next possession, but the Cardinals quickly turned the ball back over. Brianna Mullins put UCA up by four points with a layup and then another turnover by UIW gave the ball back to the Sugar Bears. Kendara Watts knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 53-47 with 1:12 remaining.
The Cardinals cut it to four points with 18 seconds to play, but the Sugar Bears were able to salt the game away at the foul line.
The Cardinals shot 41.8 percent from the field, made 2-of-7 from three-point range and were 1-for-5 at the charity stripe. Adams led the team with 16 points and four rebounds while
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) added 14 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) contributed six points, six rebounds and five assists. The team had seven more rebounds than UCA, but committed four more turnovers.
The Sugar Bears shot 47.1 percent from the field, made 2-of-7 from three-point range and were 8-of-13 at the foul line. Maggie Proffitt and Brianna Mullins each had 15 points apiece. Watts finished with 10 points.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Houston Baptist.
