Huskies Nip Cardinals

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team nearly snapped their losing streak on Thursday night, but they came up just short at Southland Conference rival Houston Baptist University.  The Huskies won 67-64 at Sharp Gym.

The Cardinals (5-19, 2-11) came back from a 9-point deficit with 9:33 remaining in the game to tie the score at 64-64 with 48 seconds remaining after a pair of free throws by Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS).  HBU's Rachel Arthur answered with a jumper in the paint to reclaim the lead.  UIW had two chances to score on their next possession, but could not convert.

HBU had a chance to ice the game with 10 seconds to play, but Erin McGarrachan was only able to make 1-of-2 free throws giving the Cardinals one more chance.  UIW ran a play for the team's top outside shooter, Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS), but her three-point attempt did not fall.  The game featured six ties and four lead changes.

The Cardinals got big games from post players Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) and Brooks as well as point guard Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS).  Maosa registered her team high fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Brooks also had a huge night with 17 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.  Holman ran the team with precision scoring 13 points and dishing out eight assists while committing only one turnover.  She also had three steals.  The team shot 40.3 percent from the field, made 2-of-6 from three-point range and was 8-for-10 at the charity stripe.  They had four more rebounds than HBU.

The Huskies (11-14, 5-9) shot 43.1 percent from the field, made 7-of-13 from three-point range and were 10-for-12 at the foul line.  Anna Strickland had 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six blocks and an outstanding all-around performance.  McGarrachan finished with 15 points and eight rebounds while Arthur had 15 points and five boards.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. The team will be celebrating "Live Pink Day" and Play 4 Kay.
