SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team took a lead into halftime against Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center, but were dealt a 61-49 loss.
The opening half was close throughout with the team's trading the lead, but no one was able to take control. The Cardinals (5-20, 2-12) took the lead into halftime thanks to a steal and fast break layup by
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) right before the buzzer.
In the second half, the Cardinals scored a few quick buckets, but went cold after that. They led 34-31 after a jumper by Adams with 17:39 remaining and did not score again until Adams hit a 12-foot jumper in the lane. By that time the Islanders (13-13, 9-6) had a 6-point lead and they would never relinquish the lead. They were able to push the advantage to double digits over the final 6:30 and they comfortably won by 12.
The Cardinals shot 40.7 percent from the field, but were 0-for-5 from three-point range. They made 5-of-6 from the foul line. Adams led the team with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting and she grabbed five rebounds.
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) added 10 points and eight rebounds while
Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) had nine points and five assists.
The Islanders shot 45.3 percent from the field, made 2-of-14 from three-point range and were 11-of-15 at the charity stripe. Kassie Jones led the way with 19 points and five rebounds while Olivia Fouty chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds. They had four more rebounds than the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Stephen F. Austin for a 7 p.m. tip.
