NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team went up against the top team in the Southland Conference on Thursday night and lost at Stephen F. Austin, 58-44 at the WRJ Coliseum.
The Cardinals (5-21, 2-13) gave the Ladyjacks (20-6, 13-2) a run their money, but came up a little short. UIW held SFA to just 26 points in the first half, but only scored 15. The Cardinals held the Ladyjacks to 29.7 percent shooting from the field while shooting 24.0 percent.
In the second half, the Cardinals hung around and closed to within nine points with 4:29 remaining in the game on an
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) lay-up. However, they were unable to get any closer and SFA was able to clinch the game with a pair of lay-ups down the stretch.
The Cardinals shot 38.0 percent from the field, made 2-of-5 from three-point range and were 4-for-8 at the charity stripe. Adams finished with 13 points while
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) chipped in with 10 points and two blocks. Point guard
Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) pulled down a career high 12 rebounds, dished out five assists and had three steals.
The Ladyjacks shot 35.9 percent from the field, made 5-of-24 from three-point range and were 7-of-9 at the foul line. Tierany Henderson posted a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Taylor Ross scored 12 points while Brittney Matthew dished out six assists. Charisma Alexander chipped in with eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lamar University for a 4 p.m. game.
