SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to Notre Dame, 11-1 in the Irish Alamo Invitational championship game on Sunday at Wolff Stadium.
Notre Dame's (7-1) Nick McCarty held the Cardinals (4-4) in check for seven innings and earned the win. McCarty retired the first eleven hitters he faced and surrendered four hits and one run in his start. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.
Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) took the loss for the Cardinals as he gave up four runs in 3.2 innings.
Adam Hunter (Yoakum/Yoakum HS) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Cardinals, making it four straight appearances without allowing a run.
Fighting Irish leadoff hitter Jake Johnson collected three hits and scored twice. Ryan Dull brought in three runs with two hits and Cavan Biggio finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI.
The Cardinals' lone run came in the fifth inning when Will Triebes (Pflugerville/Hendrickson HS) hit into a 5-4-3 double play with runners on first and third and no outs.
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) scored on the play, after hitting a double down the right field line and moving to third on a single by
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith).
The Cardinals collected five hits, one run and committed three errors in the loss while the Fighting Irish pushed 11 runs across the plate with 14 hits and no errors.
The Cardinals are right back in action and on the road Tuesday and Wednesday. They visit UTSA on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and #23 Texas A&M on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
