SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team notched a 6-1 victory over former conference rival Midwestern State University on Friday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (4-5) continued to have their struggles in doubles play as the visiting Mustangs earned the lone point by winning 2-of-3 matches.
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and
Joey Vatanadilok (San Antonio/Bridgeway Academy) were able to pick up an 8-6 win at #2 doubles, but the Mustangs won a pair of tie-breakers at #1 and #3 to take the early lead in the match.
Despite falling behind, the Cardinals bounced back to sweep all six singles matches.
Leonard Ivic (Split, Croatia) and Vatanadilok won in straight sets at #1 and #4 singles, respectively. The other four UIW players all dropped the first set and responded to come back and win the final two sets.
Philipp Raickovic (Bernan, Germany) and
Ryan Hoverson (Grand Forks, ND/Red River HS) each won their final sets, 10-8.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at home against Laredo Community College with start time set for 1 p.m.
