SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After a 10-day layoff, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team will play two games in three days. They host UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday at 6 p.m., and then will make a short drive to Trinity to face the Tigers on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Cardinals (3-1) remain undefeated at the McDermott Center after three home games. The team is averaging 66.2 points per game while allowing 54.8 per game. On the offensive side, the Cardinals are led by senior guard
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) with 11.8 points per game and junior guard
Brianna Williams (Wylie/Mesquite HS) who is averaging 10.0 points per game. Junior
Jordan Franks (Norman, OK/Norman HS) is averaging a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game despite only playing 15.5 minutes per game. Sophomore
Quincy Baker (Houston/Klein HS) collected her first career double-double in UIW's last game and is averaging 8.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Melina Merritt (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge HS) leads the team with 17 assists on the season.
UT Rio Grande Valley (4-4) has struggled on the road this year as they are 1-3. They are coming off a 49-46 loss to Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Tuesday and have lost three of their last four. They lost a close game at TCU, 71-67. They are averaging 67.0 points per game and allowing 59.0 per game. Their leading scorer is Shawnte' Goff with 15.4 a game and Mary Savoy is right behind with 12.9 points per game. The two have also combined for 40 steals on the year. Savoy has 23 steals, 11 blocks and is averaging 10.8 rebounds per game. Goff leads the team with 27 assists. The Vaqueros compete in the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference.
Trinity (6-0) is undefeated on the year and three of those wins have come on their home court where they will host UIW. They are members of the NCAA DIII Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. They are averaging 66.7 points per game and were just tabbed 19
th in the latest D3hoops.com rankings. Anecia Richardson and Elizabeth Balido lead the way, each averaging 12.2 points per game. As a team, the Tigers average 5.7 blocks and 10.3 steals per game.
The Cardinals are 0-4 all-time against UTRGV who was formerly UT-Pan American and they are 3-1 against Trinity.
