SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team opens their home Southland Conference schedule on Friday night against Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
The Cardinals (0-8, 0-1) are coming off a loss against Sam Houston State University last Sunday to begin the Southland schedule. Senior
Sarah Johnson (Austin/Home School) and sophomore
Alexis Santos (Mesquite/North Mesquite HS) are tied for team lead with two goals apiece. Johnson has taken a total 18 shots and Santos has eight. Freshman
Nikki Popa (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and junior
Elizabeth Washington (Frisco/Centennial HS) have each dished out an assist.
The UIW defense has allowed 23 goals this year. They have rotated three different goalkeepers throughout the season. Junior
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) has played the most time in goal with 405 minutes. Freshman
Haley Nelson (Jackson, NE/Bishop Heelan Catholic) and junior
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) each have a 2.00 goals against average.
The Lions (9-1, 2-0) are currently in first place in the Southland Conference and have outscored their opponents, 38-5 this year. Bri Singh has tallied 10 goals and three assists to lead the team with 23 points. Maggie Ramsey and Kayla Vera have each scored at least five goals and a total of 13 players have scored at least one goal. Hope Sabadash has been the main player in goal for the Lions and she has a 0.54 goals against average with 41 saves.
Fans attending the game will receive free admission with the donation of two canned goods that will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank.
