Box Score 2 ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word traveled to Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian on Saturday for a doubleheader and lost bothends, 9-0 and 7-5 at Poly Wells Field.
In the first game, the Wildcats (21-27, 10-9) handled the Cardinals (20-30, 6-14) via run-rule in five innings.
Danielle Ramirez had the only two hits of the game for UIW as Peyton Mosley tossed a shutout.
The Wildcats scored once in the first inning and then exploded for eight runs in the third inning. They sent 13 batters to the plate in the third and it was Cara Hoover's grand slam that blew the game wide open. Courtney Flanary had three RBI's and Taylor Brown added two RBI's.
In the second game, it was another big inning for the Wildcats that proved to be the difference. They scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 advantage. A pair of UIW errors gave ACU extra life in the inning and Lyndi Smith made them pay with a grand slam of her own.
The Cardinals claimed an early lead in the game thanks to the bat of
Katie Helm. She smacked a three-run homer in the second inning and then scored the team's fourth run of the game in the fourth inning. UIW loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but could not score. They closed to within two runs in the sixth inning on a solo homer by
Christy Trevino, but could get no closer.
Emily Seidel picked up the win for the Wildcats. She went 6.1 innings allowing 11 hits, four earned runs and a walk while striking out two. Mosley recorded the last two outs to notch the save. Smith finished the game with three hits for the home team.
Kristin Hebert took the loss for the Cardinals despite allowing just one earned run in 3.0 innings.
Mikaela Flores pitched well in relief giving up two hits and a run in 3.0 innings. Helm finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate while Flores and
Alex Zepeda each had a pair of hits.
The Cardinals and Wildcats close out the season on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
