Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Northwestern State evened up the three-game Southland Conference baseball series at University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday with a 7-4 win.
In a rare hit-fest at Sullivan Field, both teams had over 10 hits and they combined for 25. The Demons (26-21, 14-9) used a key two-out error by the Cardinals (15-28, 6-11) to score three unearned runs in the fifth inning. They proved to be the deciding runs in the game.
The Cardinals put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Jason Stone (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) singled with one out and then
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) hit a single up the middle that was mishandled allowing Stone to come all the way around to score.
The Demons quickly responded in the top of the second inning. C.J. Webster tripled with two out to score Nathan Lyons. Joel Atkinson followed with another single to bring in Webster with the go-ahead run.
The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the second, but the Demons matched it with a solo home run by Caleb Dugas in the top of the third inning. UIW tied the game in the fourth when they put together three hits in the inning, including a run-scoring double by Stone.
In the top of the fifth inning, Edwin Gomez led off with a triple for the Demons and scored on a sacrifice fly. With two outs, a pair of singles and an infield error loaded the bases. Nick Heath brought in a run when he was hit by a pitch and then Webster drove in two with a single to cap the rally.
The Cardinals would get a run back in the fifth, but that was as close as they would get.
Junior left-hander
Dylan Boss (Boerne/Boerne HS) was tagged with the loss for UIW. He allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 4.2 innings.
Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) came on in relief and tossed 4.1 shutout innings allowing five hits and no walks while striking out three. The team had four players with two hits apiece. Stone was 2-for-5 with a double, run scored and an RBI.
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double and a run scored.
Josh Oller improved to 3-1 on the season for the Demons. He went 5.0 innings allowing eight hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out two. Cameron Brewer pitched the final four innings of the game giving up three hits and no runs to earn the save. Webster was the offensive star of the game going 3-for-5 with three RBI's and a run scored.
The two teams will close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
