Cardinals Win Again

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team picked up a second straight win over Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian on Friday, 4-3 at Sullivan Field.

The Cardinals (17-32, 8-15) received a second consecutive strong starting pitching performance.  Junior left-hander Dylan Boss (Boerne/Boerne HS) went 7.0 innings to earn his third win of the year.  He scattered five hits and four walks while allowing one earned run.  He struck out nine batters on the day.

UIW pounded out nine hits in the first four innings, but were only able to score twice.  Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) led off the first inning with a double and then scored on a single by Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS).  In the second inning, it was William Triebes (Pflugerville/Hendrickson HS) driving in a run with a double.

The Wildcats (17-32, 6-17) scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning.  Seth Spivey doubled with one out and scored on Aaron Draper's single.

The game stayed at 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning.  Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then moved on to third after Whitehead's infield single.  Shepherd scored when a pick off attempt at first base went wild.  With two outs, Brown drove in another run with a hustling double to left center.

The Wildcats quickly made it a one run game again in the eighth inning.  Draper led off with a single and scored on Tyler Eager's triple.  Eager then scored on a ground out.
In the ninth inning, Brandon Cogbill (Lake Dallas/Lake Dallas HS) retired the first two batters of the inning before hitting Russell Crippen with a pitch.  That brought UIW head coach Dan Heep out of the dugout and he brought in lefty Matthew Decker (Hickory Creek/Lake Dallas HS) to face Spivey, a lefty.  Decker got the job done by inducing an easy fly out to right field to earn the save.

The Cardinals had 12 hits in the game led by three from Brown.  Whitehead had two hits and scored twice while Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS), Dustin Cole (Tomball/Tomball HS) and Shepherd also had two hits apiece.

Garrett Demeyere was tagged with the loss for ACU allowing 11 hits, three earned runs and one walk in 6.2 innings.  He struck out five batters.

The two teams will close out their respective seasons on Saturday at noon.
