Box Score 2 HAMMOND, LOUISIANA – Southeastern Louisiana swept visiting University of the Incarnate Word in a Southland Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday at North Oak Park, 5-4 and 11-1.
The Cardinals (14-21, 3-6) were one inning away from winning the opener against the Lady Lions (13-17, 6-9), but could not hold a 4-1 lead. SLU tied the game in the seventh and won it in the ninth. They used the momentum from the first game to win the second game by run-rule in five innings.
UIW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the Lions in the top of the first inning. They loaded the bases with two outs when
Kristin Hebert singled and the ball was misplayed by the right fielder allowing all three runners to score. The Lions scored one in the fifth inning and threated to score more, but left the bases loaded.
The Cardinals regained a three-run lead in the sixth inning on
Mikaela Flores' (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) solo home run. She led the UIW offense with three hits and two runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Lions started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Amber Sather drew a walk and then Jessie Browne tied the game with a two-run single. UIW forced extra innings when they turned an important double play and were able to get out of the inning.
The Cardinals got a runner to third base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not score. In the bottom of the ninth, Teresa Lemos led off with a single and then UIW misplayed a sacrifice bunt attempt putting Lemos on third with no outs. Mychal Truxillo ended the game with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Lions had 13 hits off of three UIW pitchers. Katie Lacour went 4-for-5 with a run and Megan McCollum had three hits. Spencer Adkinson picked up the win with 1.1 shutout innings of relief. Hebert was handed the loss for UIW.
In the second game, the Lions took advantage of two crucial UIW errors. They scored in the bottom of the first thanks to an error. In the second inning, Vanessa Eng's two-run double gave them a 3-0 lead.
Southeastern Louisiana put the game away in the third inning. After the first two batters were retired, Truxillo reached base on an error. The flood gates opened with five consecutive hits, a walk, a hit batsmen and another single to cap off the rally.
The Cardinals had five hits in the game and only scored after
Alex Zepeda doubled and then scored on Alex Alonzo's single.
Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) allowed eight runs in 2.2 innings and took the loss.
The Lions had four players with at least two hits apiece. Eng went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI's. Megan Moore was 2-for-3 with two runs and a home run. Adkinson pitched a complete game to earn her second win of the day.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Texas Southern for a doubleheader.
