– The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team scored early and scored late in their 10-4 win over visiting Prairie View A&M on Wednesday night at Sullivan Field.
The Cardinals (13-24) jumped out to the early lead with three runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Panthers (15-21) got as close as 6-4 before UIW put the game out of reach with a 4-run eighth inning.
We are very fortunate; Prairie View has played a lot of games in the last few days," said UIW head coach Dan Heep. "If they don't walk us, I'm not sure we would have won the game. We will take the win. We have lost some games that we should have won this year that we did not, so we will take the gift."
UIW built up a 6-1 lead through the first six innings. They took advantage of a hit by pitch and a walk in the first inning to score three times and then used three walks in the fourth inning to score twice.
The Panthers were led by leadoff hitter Robert Cossey. He hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning and had three more singles and scored the team's final run in the eighth inning. They scored twice in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Jeff Sealy and a run-scoring single by Trey Price.
Prairie View had numerous chances to score more runs, but left 12 runners on base throughout the game. They left the bases loaded on two occasions.
The Cardinals drew four walks in the bottom of the eighth inning and the big hit was a two-run double by
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) to cap off the rally.
UIW finished the game with seven hits and drew 11 walks. Hoover went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI's.
Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) and
Jonathan Armijo (San Antonio/Marion Military) each drove in two runs.
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Yuba CC) drew three walks and scored a run in his return to the lineup after missing the previous 17 games with an injury.
The Cardinals used seven pitchers in the game. Freshman
Cody Richey (Comfort/Comfort HS) picked up his second win of the season. He went 4.0 innings allowing three hits, four walks and one run while striking out three.
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts.
The Panthers used eight pitchers in the contest. Pedro Maldonado was tagged with the loss after allowing the first four batters of the game to reach base with three scoring.
The Cardinals are back in action this weekend for a three-game series at McNeese State.
