Cardinals Rally Comes Up Short

Box Score

WACO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team nearly upset Baylor University on Wednesday at Baylor Ballpark losing 4-3 on the road.

The Cardinals (7-19) took the early lead, but the Bears (15-13) grabbed the lead by the third inning. Baylor led 4-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning.

In the eighth, the Cardinals put together a two-out rally. Jason Stone's (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) two-out double brought in Bryce Shepherd. Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) followed with a single and then Jesse Hoover's (Marion/Marion HS) base hit scored Stone to pull UIW to within a run. Doug Ashby entered the game for the Bears and got the next batter out. Josh Michalec came on in the ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the year.

The Bears used timely walks to propel their offense. They tied the game in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk. In the third inning, they used two walks as part of a two-run inning. They tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning when Lawton Langford walked and came around to score on Duncan Wendel's double.

Daniel Castano picked up the win for the Bears. He tossed 7.0 strong innings allowing just two hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out five. Michalec pitched a perfect ninth inning.

For the Cardinals, Chris Jones was handed the loss after allowing three runs in 2.2 innings. Jacob Potts and Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) both pitched well in relief. Potts tossed 2.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit while striking out two. Looper went 2.0 innings allowing three hits and striking out one.

Hoover led the UIW offense going 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored, RBI and a double. The Bears tallied seven hits with no one getting more than one.
