Cardinals-Lady Demons Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team made the trek to Northwestern State and split a doubleheader at Lady Demon Diamond on Friday.  The Cardinals (19-25, 5-9) lost the first game, 8-0, but came back to win the second game, 8-7 in extra innings.

The Lady Demons (20-19, 9-9) scored six times in the bottom of the first inning of the first game.  All six runs came with two outs and Cheyenne De La Garza capped the rally with a three-run double.  Micayla Sorosiak cracked a solo home run in the third inning and Tara McKenney's RBI's single ended the game in the fifth inning.

Kaylee Guidry tossed a two-hit shutout for the Lady Demons to improve to 8-3 on the season.  UIW's Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) took the loss.

The second game was completely different from the first game.  The Lady Demons still jumped out to an early lead after Cassandra Barefield drove in two with a first inning double.  However, the Cardinals exploded for seven runs in the third inning.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the third inning.  Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) followed with a two-run double to tie the game.  After a second out was recorded, Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) drove in two with a single and two batters later Christy Trevino (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) smashed a three-run homer to make it 7-2 in favor of UIW.

Northwestern State responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and then tied it in the sixth inning.  In the bottom of the sixth, Sorosiak tied the game with a pinch-hit three-run homer that would send the game to extra innings.

Neither team threatened to score until the top of the ninth inning.  Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) led off with a double and scored when Kellen Robles (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) slashed an infield single and the ball was thrown wild trying to get her out.  In the bottom half of the inning, Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) retired the first two batters and then hit a batter, but she was able to retire the final hitter to earn the win.

Hebert pitched 4.0 innings in relief allowing two hits, one run and one walk while striking out five to improve to 7-7 on the year.  UIW finished with 10 hits in the game as Zepeda and Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) each had a pair.  Waltrip finished the game 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks.

Baylee Gray was tagged with the loss for the Lady Demons.  She pitched 6.1 innings in relief without giving up an earned run.  She walked two and struck out seven.  McKenney led all players with three hits while Brittany Virgoe went 2-for-5 at the plate.

The two teams will finish their season series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
