Baseball Evens Series

Box Score HAMMOND, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team evened up their weekend series at Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana with a 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon at PKD at Alumni Field.

The Cardinals (11-21, 4-4) received a strong pitching performance from junior left-hander Dylan Boss.  Boss went 6.0 innings allowing six hits, two walks and a run while striking out seven to improve to 2-3 on the season.

UIW never trailed in the game as they scored twice in the top of the first inning.  They loaded the bases with no one out, but Lions' (22-12, 8-6) starting pitcher Tate Scioneaux was able to retire the next two batters without any damage.  However, Jason Stone (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) came through for the Cardinals with a two-run single to put the visitors on the board.

The Lions cut the UIW lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Jameson Fisher led off the inning with a double and then scored on Brett Hoffman's two-out double to make it 2-1 in favor of the Cardinals.

The Cardinals added to their lead in the very next inning.  With two outs, the UIW bats came alive.  Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) singled, Colton Besett singled and then Stone doubled to score Hoover.  Besett came in on a wild pitch and Jonathan Armijo (San Antonio/Marion Military) singled home Stone to cap off the rally.

The Lions mounted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning.  After one out was recorded, a hit batsmen and a single put runners on first and third.   Daniel Midyett brought in one run with a ground out and then Hoffman came through with another RBI double.  UIW closer Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) quickly entered the game and induced a fly out to end the inning.  In the bottom of the ninth, Looper gave up a single, but was not seriously threatened as he picked up his third save of the year.

The Cardinal bats pounded out 13 hits in the contest one day after being shutout.  Stone was 3-for-5 with three RBI's, a double and a run while Hoover had two hits, including a triple, and scored a run.  Second baseman Dustin Cole added a season-high three hits as well.

The Lions managed nine hits in the contest, but Jacob Seward and Hoffman accounted for six of them.  Fisher scored a pair of runs.  Scioneaux allowed nine hits and five runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss.

The teams will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
