Softball Responds with a Win

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After getting swept by visiting Nicholls State on Saturday, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team pulled off a walk-off 11-10 victory on Sunday at Cardinals Field.

The Cardinals (14-18, 3-3) trailed by as many as five runs in the game and still trailed 10-7 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.  In the sixth inning, UIW scored two runs on a double by Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS).  In the seventh inning, Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) tied the game on a wild pitch and then Alonzo won the game with a one-out single to deep left field that brought in the winning run.

The Colonels (12-25, 3-8) scored a total of 35 runs in the three-game series and built up their lead in the finale with three consecutive three-run innings.  Hayley Parkerson struck the big blow with a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

The Cardinals tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the fourth inning.  They scored five times thanks to six walks.  Nicholls came back with three unearned runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-7 lead setting up the final two innings.

The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits in the game, including a pair of first inning home runs by Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) and Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS).  Alonzo came into the game in the fourth inning and went 2-for-2 with four RBI's and a walk.  Flores was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Zepeda went 2-for-5 with two runs.  Christy Trevino (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) went 2-for-2 with three walks, a run and an RBI.  Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) picked up the win with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

The Colonels pounded out 16 hits with six players slapping at least two hits.  Taylor Terrio led the way with a 4-for-5 performance that included three runs.  Parkerson, Danielle Phillips and Brittany Marcet combined for seven hits and each had three RBI's.  Morgan Skinner was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in 2.2 innings.

The Cardinals are back in action next weekend on the road at Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana.
