Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday afternoon at Cardinals Field to visiting Southland Conference rival Nicholls State. The Colonels won the first game, 7-3 and the second game, 18-1.
In the first game, the Colonels (12-24, 3-7) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Cardinals (13-18, 2-3) tried to come back. Brittany Marcet led the visiting attack going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI's while Colleen Levy was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI's and a double. Jackie Johnson picked up the win for Nicholls after tossing 6.0 innings allowing four hits, three runs and two walks while striking out 10.
The Cardinals only had four hits in the game, but freshman
Christy Trevino still managed a pair of doubles and she drove in two runs.
Brooke DuBois took the loss after allowing seven hits, four earned runs and three walks in 6.0 innings. She also struck out four batters.
The second game belonged to the Colonels who jumped out to a 14-0 lead after two innings and won in five innings. Taylor Terrio started the game with a home run and it never got any better for UIW. Terrio was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI's as she led the 16-hit attack. Haley Parkerson was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI's while Kayla Prater drove in five runs. Hannah Haydel picked up the win in the circle.
The Cardinals had nine hits in the contest, but could not get the clutch hit to score some runs.
Alex Zepeda, DuBois and
Mia Esposito each had a pair of hits.
The teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday at noon.
