Box Score TULSA, OKLAHOMA – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team traveled outside of the state of Texas for the first time this year and were handed a 2-0 defeat at Oral Roberts University on Wednesday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (9-10) scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jose Trevino led off with a lead-off home run and Logen Domenico followed with a double. He later came around to score on Audie Afenir's two-out single. ORU would only get two more hits for the remainder of the game.
The Cardinals (6-15) puts runner in scoring position in the first and third innings when
Aaron Warren (Schertz/Wagner HS) and
Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) hit a doubles, but both runners were left on base.
The best chance for UIW to score came in the top of the eighth inning. A pair of walks and an infield single loaded the bases with one out. However, Jordan Romano got out of the inning when he induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the scoring threat.
Sophomore
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) took the hard luck loss for the Cardinals. He went 5.0 innings allowing three hits, two runs and no walks while striking out five.
Brandon Cogbill (Lake Dallas/Lake Dallas HS),
Matthew Decker (Hickory Creek/Lake Dallas HS) and
Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) combined for three shutout innings of relief.
Pepe Gomez picked up the win for the Golden Eagles tossing 7.0 shutout innings. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six. Romano earned his fourth save of the season with 1.2 shutout innings of relief.
Warren led the Cardinals with two hits in the game.
Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) went 1-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games.
The Cardinals are back in action next Wednesday night at home against Prairie View A&M at 6:30 p.m.
