Cardinals Snap Skid

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Strong pitching and timely hitting led to a 5-2 win for the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team on Sunday at Sullivan Field.  The Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak to visiting Central Michigan with the win.

The Cardinals (6-14) took advantage of three Chippewa errors and played flawless defense themselves.  UIW scored in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed.  After CMU tied the game in the third inning, the Cardinals reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Dustin Cole.

The Chippewas (10-10) cut a 3-1 lead in half in the top of the eighth inning when Adam Collins drew a bases loaded walk.  Alex Shaffer was able to get UIW out of the inning by inducing a ground out.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Cardinals tacked on a pair of insurance runs when Slade Brown came through with a two-out, two-run single.  Shaffer allowed two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but held on to earn the save.

UIW starting pitcher Jacob Potts posted his third straight quality start.  He went 7.0 innings and allowed five hits, one run and no walks while striking out one to improve to 2-1 on the season.  The offense finished with 10 hits.  Brown, Cole and Colton Besett each had two hits.  Brown reached base safely four times thanks to a pair of walks.

"We got some starting pitching today," said UIW head coach Dan Heep.  "Potts did a great job.  We got some hits and scored some runs and were just more aggressive.  Yesterday was our worst game of the year and it was good to bounce back from that."

The Chippewas had seven hits led by two from Nick Regnier.  Adam Aldred was tagged with the loss despite allowing only six hits and one earned run in 6.0 innings.  He had four walks and four strikeouts.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday at Oral Roberts for one game at 6:30 p.m.
