Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team was swept on Saturday by visiting UH-Victoria, 6-4 and 4-1 at Cardinals Field.
The Jaguars (13-8) never trailed in either game and Shelby Smith was the offensive star of the day. She went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI's and a homer in the first game. She came back with a three-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game that provided the margin of victory.
In the first game, the Cardinals (11-15) trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Emily Lasky led off the inning with a pinch-hit home run and later in the inning the Cardinals pulled to within 5-4 when
Alex Zepeda walked with the bases loaded.
Marley Moehrig put the visitors back on top by two runs with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Alex Holland picked up the win pitching 5.0 innings. Griffin Gilbert notched a save with 2.0 shutout innings of relief.
Brooke DuBois was tagged with the loss for UIW after giving up seven hits and one earned run in 4.0 innings.
Taylor Johnson led the offense with two runs scored.
In the second game, UIW's
Kristin Hebert and UH-Victoria's Savannah Crittenden matched zeroes on the scoreboard through four innings. In the fifth inning, Smith smacked her three run homer.
In the sixth inning,
Kellen Robles led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. She later scored on a double by Zepeda, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get.
The Jaguars added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Smith.
The Cardinals recorded a triple play in the top of the sixth inning. With runners on second and third, Kristina Droz, hit a sinking line drive into left field that was caught by Robles. Both runners were moving on the pitch allowing Robles to throw to Lindsay Hood at second base who then relayed a throw to
Christy Trevino at third base for the trifecta.
Crittenden earned the win for the Jaguars. UH-V had 10 hits in the game including two by Smith and three by Rachel Laird. Hebert was tagged with the loss.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday at Abilene Christian for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
