Men Win, Women Lose in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's swim teams opened 2014 at UC-San Diego on Sunday.  The men defeated the Tritons, 134-128 while the women lost, 205-54.  The women also lost to San Jose State, 180-70. (Results)

For both Incarnate Word teams it was not a meet of top individual performances, but was good competition as the team trained through the meet.  Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine) had the top performance for the UIW women with a third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.  She hit the wall in 24.12.

The UIW men edged out UC-San Diego thanks to eight first place finishes.  The best event for the team was the 100-yard butterfly where Daniel Torres (Chihuahua, Mexico/COBACH 3), Andrii Nikishenko (Kiev, Ukraine) and Jorge Escarcega (El Paso/Cathedral HS) swept the event getting first, second and third place, respectively.

The Cardinals opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:24.39.  The members of the team where Nikishenko, Thiago Parravicini (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/C.E.L.), Torres and Alex Brouwer (Scottsdale, AZ/Notre Dame Prep).

Connor Hennessy (San Antonio/Business Careers HS) and David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) each won a pair of events.  Hennessy took the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:43.19 and the 400-yard freestyle in 4:43.30.  Moore added victories in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.25 and the 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.48.

In addition to their victory in the 400 medley relay, both Nikishenko and Torres picked up individual wins.  Nikishenko won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:52.66 and Torres touched first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 50.71.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at home against Southwestern University.
