Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team is flying high following a 75-64 win over Southland Conference rival Lamar University on Saturday at the McDermott Center.
The UIW Cardinals (16-3, 4-2) battled through foul problems, but proved to be too strong for the visiting Lamar Cardinals (2-18, 1-7). Junior guard
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) and senior forward
Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Creek HS) combined for 48 points to lead UIW to their fourth SLC win in five games.
UIW jumped out to the early lead behind nine points by Horton in the first 6:12 of the game. They led 19-10 after a three-pointer by Livingston with 12:07 to play in the first half.
Lamar slowly began to cut into the UIW advantage and eventually took a 30-29 lead after a Nimrod Hilliard jumper in the lane with 2:36 to play in the half. UIW responded by going on a 10-0 run in the final 1:50 of the half to take a 39-30 lead at the break.
In the second half, UIW extended the lead to 15 points after another three-pointer by Livingston with 13:39 remaining in the game. A 9-0 run by the visitors cut the lead to six points midway through the stanza. However, Incarnate Word came through with some big buckets, including a three-pointer by
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) to push the lead back to 10 points with 4:31 remaining.
Livingston closed out the game with a pair of steals that led to a breakaway layup and a thunderous alley-oop dunk off a pass off the backboard from
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS).
Livingston finished the game with 27 points and seven steals giving him 10 consecutive games with at least 17 points. Horton finished with 21 points and eight rebounds despite fouling out with nearly eight minutes left in the game. The Cardinals shot 47.5 percent from the field, made 8-of-18 from three-point range and were 9-of-13 at the foul line. They had 33 rebounds, 14 assists and 10 turnovers.
Lamar shot 42.2 percent from the field, made 4-of-10 three-pointers and was 22-of-26 at the free throw line. Hilliard led the team with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Donovan Ross added 11 points and three blocks while Anthony Holliday finished with 10 points. They had 29 rebounds, 14 assists and 14 turnovers.
UIW is back in action on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Northwestern State.
