SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word and Lamar University will meet in a basketball doubleheader on Saturday at the McDermott Center. The women's game begins at 2 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.
Both UIW and Lamar feature a Cardinal mascot and it will be the first time the two schools have met as Southland Conference rivals.
The UIW women are coming off a 60-51 loss to Sam Houston State on Thursday night. They are 8-9 overall with a 2-3 record in the SLC. This will be the fourth straight home game for Incarnate Word where they are 4-2 overall.
UIW is averaging 61.2 points per game and allowing 64.6 per game.
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) leads the team with 13.8 points per game.
Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS) and
Ifunanya Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) are both scoring 10 points per game. Mora also leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game.
Lamar enters the game with a 10-8 record and a 5-2 mark in the SLC. They defeated Abilene Christian by two points on Thursday night on the road. The team is averaging 69.7 points per game and allowing 68.6 points per game. Dominique Edwards leads the team with 16.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Three other players are scoring in double figures.
On the men's side of things, UIW is 15-3 with a 3-2 record in the conference. They defeated Sam Houston State on Thursday night, 85-74. The team remains at the top of the conference in scoring margin, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, three-point percentage defense, rebounding margin and assists. Junior guard
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) leads the way with 18.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He has scored at least 17 points in each of his last eight games and leads the league with 22.4 points per game in conference play.
In addition to Livingston, UIW has a number of other strong options on offense.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) has scored in double figures in all 18 games this season and is averaging 17.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Freshman
Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) pumps in 11.6 points per game and has made 36 three-pointers on the season. Finally,
Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Creek HS) has upped his scoring average to 10.9 points per game and is averaging 14.0 points per game in SLC action.
Lamar is coming off only their second win of the season on Thursday when they defeated Abilene Christian, 65-57 on the road. They are 2-17 overall and 1-11 in the SLC. The team is averaging 67.3 points per game and allowing 79.5 points per game. Nimrod Hilliard leads the team with 14.9 points and 4.3 assists per game while Amos Wilson chips in with 12.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
