Late Bucket Stops Cardinals

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Shawn Glover's baseline jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining gave visiting Oral Roberts a 79-77 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word's men's basketball team at the McDermott Center on Saturday.  The loss was the first for the Cardinals at home this year.

The Golden Eagles (10-8, 4-1) shot the lights out for the game hitting 52.0 percent of their field goal attempts and they went 9-fo-14 from three-point range.  Bobby Word was a perfect 5-for-5 from long range and finished with 17 points.

Despite ORU's shooting prowess, the Cardinals (14-3, 2-2) put themselves in position to win the game.  A slow start saw the visitors take a 24-12 lead, but Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) almost single-handedly got the Cardinals back into the game with 18 first half points.  UIW outscored ORU, 19-10 over the final six minutes of the half and went into the break down by two points, 41-39.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to hold a slim advantage.  The lead bumped up to 60-53 with 10:19 to play when Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Creek HS) scored on a lay-up and then hit a three-pointer to get the Cardinals back into the game.

The Cardinals would finally tie the game with 5:27 remaining when Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) forced a turnover.  Livingston picked up the loose ball and flew to the hoop for a monster dunk.

In the final five minutes, the Golden Eagles force fed Glover, the leading scorer in the Southland Conference and he delivered scoring 10 of the team's final 12 points.  Each time Glover would score the Cardinals seemed to have the answer as first Horton drained a baseline jumper with 1:15 to tie the game and then Burmeister made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 77 with 18.6 seconds left.

Glover had the final answer with his jumper with 1.2 seconds left.  The Cardinals had to go the length of the court and were unable to get a shot off.

UIW shot 47.2 percent from the field, made 6-of-13 from three-point range and were 21-of-25 at the foul line.  Livingston led the team with 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists.  Horton finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field.  Ian Markolf (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) each scored 10 points in the game.  UIW had 10 more rebounds than the Golden Eagles, but committed three more turnovers.

The Golden Eagles were 26-of-50 from the field and went 18-of-28 at the foul line.  Glover finished with 24 points and a team high six rebounds.  D.J. Jackson added 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at home against Sam Houston State at 7:30 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on CSN Houston.
