Men's Soccer Handed 1-0 Loss

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team started the 2013 season the same way they finished the 2012 season, with a hard fought 1-0 loss.  The Cardinals fell to Missouri State on Friday night at Plaster Field.

The Bears (1-0) scored on the very first shot of the game when Emmerich Hoegg put one past Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) in the second minute.  The remainder of the first half was played evenly with both teams taking six shots.  The Bears had the upper hand on set pieces earning six corner kicks while the Cardinals (0-1) had two corner kicks.

In the second half, the Cardinals continued to press forward, but were unable to get the equalizer.  Late in the match, the game got a bit chippy with UIW tagged with three yellow cards and a red card while the Bears also picked up a yellow card.  The Cardinals played a man down over the final 15 minutes of the match.

Kahan had a strong game for UIW recording five saves in goal, but was still tagged with the loss.  Vinny Bailey (Southport, Eng./King George V) was the top offensive player for the squad firing off three shots, but was not able to beat MSU's Trevor Spangenberg who was credited with the shutout and two saves.

The Cardinals will remain on the road over the Labor Day weekend.  They travel to Central Arkansas for a 1 o'clock kickoff on Monday afternoon where they will attempt to get their first win of the season.
