Cardinals Fall to #13 St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team played crosstown rival #13 St. Mary's University on Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium and lost, 8-4.

The Cardinals (25-16) scored in the first inning to take and early lead, but the Rattlers (28-11) scored the next eight runs in the game.  UIW scored a run in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth inning, but that was as close as they would get.

The Rattlers scored two runs in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth inning to build up their lead.  Billy Richard went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and three RBI's while Derek Moczygemba was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.   Moczygemba also pitched 6.2 innings to earn the win.  He allowed five hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out seven.  They finished the game with 10 hits.

The Cardinals had eight hits and Jordan Littlefield (Marion/Marion HS) was the only player on the team to have more than one hit.  John Zule (San Antonio/Stevens HS) went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks.  Joe Mills (Allen/Allen HS) started the game on the mound and went 2.0 innings allowing three hits, two runs and two walks while striking out one in a loss.  UIW used seven different pitchers in the game.

The Cardinals are back in action this weekend with a four game series at Lone Star Conference rival West Texas A&M.  The series opens on Friday with a single game at 7 p.m.
