ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team split a pair of games at Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian on Friday and came back with a 1-0 win on Saturday to take the season series at Crutcher Scott Field. (
Box Score)
The Cardinals (11-7, 2-1) received a brilliant performance in the pitching circle from senior
Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS). She tossed her first shutout of the season scattering four hits and one walk while striking out seven to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Wildcats' (14-10, 1-2) starting pitcher Peyton Mosley nearly matched Sanchez pitch-for-pitch, but the Cardinals were able to scrape a run in the top of the sixth inning.
Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes HS) hit a one-out double and advanced to third on an error. She scored on
Shelby Waltrip's (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) sacrifice fly.
Sanchez retired the Wildcats in order in the sixth inning, but made things interesting in the seventh. ACU's first two batters reached base, but then Sanchez induced a pair of fly outs. With two outs, Demi McNulty recorded in infield single to load the bases, but Sanchez was able to get Anna Jones to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at home against UT-Permian Basin in a doubleheader.
