Cards and Dustdevils Split

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-International split a softball doubleheader on Monday at Cardinals Field.  The Dustdevils (16-23) won the first game, 5-1 while the Cardinals (15-10) came back with a 13-2 win in the second game. (Game 1, Game 2)

The Cardinals were stymied by TAMIU pitcher Kyndall Reeves.  She held the Cardinals scoreless until the seventh inning when senior Kim Hanson (Devine/Devine HS) hit a solo home run.  The homer was Hanson's team-leading fourth of the season.

Senior Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) started the first game for the Cardinals and allowed five hits and three runs before being pulled in the fourth inning. Credited with the loss, Sanchez is now 8-4.  Freshman Kandace Patek (Magnolia/Tomball HS) finished off the game for the Cardinals and allowed five hits and two runs in 3.2 innings.

Reaves tossed a complete game to improve to 6-6 on the season.  She allowed six hits and one run while striking out two.  Kristen LaBuhn had the big hit for the visitors with a two-run homer in the third inning that would be all they needed for the win.  Cassie Garcia and Esme Gonzalez each had two hits in the game.

In the second game, the Cardinals offense came alive with 14 hits and 13 runs.  Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) and Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton HS) were each 3-for-3 at the plate.  Johnson scored three times, drove in two and had a double while Zepeda scored twice and drove in two.  Melanie Padilla (San Antonio/Marshall HS) went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.  Kandace Patek and Victoria Silva (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) each had two hits as well.  Patek went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI's and Silva smacked a double and drove in a run.

Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) picked up the win in a 5.0-inning complete game.  She scattered seven hits and a walk while allowing only two runs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. at home against Oklahoma City University.
