Cardinals Drop Series to Aggies

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team was handed a 1-0 loss to Lone Star Conference rival Cameron on Saturday and gave the Aggies a 2-1 series win at Cardinals Field. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (14-9, 3-3) were held scoreless for the first time this season.  Senior Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) posted a good performance from the mound, allowing four hits and one run against the Aggies.  She also picked up eight strikeouts.  The loss makes her 8-3 on the season.

The Aggies' (8-14, 2-4) starting pitcher Kelsey Hebert gave up four hits to the Cardinals, but Cameron was able to put up a run in the third inning.  Pinch runner Makenzie Burk reached home plate on an error, giving Cameron the lead and the only run of the game.

A double from Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) with no outs in the bottom of the seventh put the Cardinals in good scoring position, but Cameron's second pitcher, Samantha Betts, would send the Cardinals' next two batters back to the dugout.  The save was Betts' second of the season.

The Cardinals will have one day off before they are back in action against Texas A&M-International for a double-header on Monday at Cardinals Field. The non-conference matchup will begin at 2 p.m.
