Softball Takes on Cameron

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team appears to be back in form after a doubleheader sweep of UT-Permian Basin on Tuesday and will host Lone Star Conference rival Cameron this weekend.  The teams will play two games on Friday starting at 4 p.m. and one game on Saturday at noon at Cardinals Field.

The Cardinals (13-7, 2-1) hope to build upon their past week's games that saw them go 4-1.  Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes HS) has been the team's offensive leader in a number of categories.  She is hitting .391 with five doubles, two home runs and 16 runs batted in.  She has also played great defense at third base with only one error on the season.  As a team, the Cardinals are leading the conference with a .980 fielding percentage.

In the circle, LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) has lived up to the billing.  She is currently 8-1 with a 1.24 earned run average.  She has 62 strikeouts in 62.0 innings and is holding the opposition to a .204 batting average.  She has posted shutouts in each of her last two games.

The Aggies (6-13, 0-3) opened the LSC schedule last week with three homes losses to Angelo State.  They are hitting .318 as a team and have cracked 13 home runs.  Leslie Martini leads the team with 22 RBI's and has hit four homers while Sonora Zukerman leads the team with five homers.  Spencer Ferrell is hitting .477 with 18 runs scored.  Samantha Betts is the team's top pitcher with a 5-5 record and a 2.59 ERA.  She has struck out 80 batters in 75.2 innings.
