SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word softball team swept a double header over UT-Permian Basin on Tuesday afternoon at Cardinals Field.  The Cardinals (13-7) won the first game, 2-0 and the second game, 10-2 in five innings. (Game 1, Game 2)

In game one it was a pitchers duel early.  Both teams only managed two hits through the first four innings.  The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a little bit of luck on their side. With two outs and runners on first and second Victoria Silva hit a hard ground ball which resulted in an error by the second baseman. As a result, Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles) scored from second to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, UIW added an insurance run.  Melanie Padilla (San Antonio/Marshall) got her only hit of the game by doubling to deep left field.  With two outs Waltrip singled to center field scoring Padilla.

Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall) picked up her eighth win of the season with a solid effort.  She gave up only three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in her second straight shutout.  Desiree Valero moved to 3-9 on the season with the loss for the Falcons.

In game two the Cardinals got off to a hot start.  They scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.  Waltrip got things started as she singled scoring Alex Zepeda (Sinton/Sinton).  Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes) got in on the early action driving in two on a single to right field.  UIW added two more runs in the second inning and three more in the third inning to gain an early 9-0 advantage.

Incarnate Word started the day going 11 innings without giving up a run until they gave up two runs in the 5th inning.  Courtney McCoy (Hutto/Hendrickson) ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single giving the Cardinals an eight-run rule victory.

Waltip went 5.0 innings giving up eight hits and two runs while striking out four in the process.  She improves to 4-5 on the season. Janessa Martinez took the loss after she gave up four runs before being pulled in the first inning.

Incarnate Word will return to action this weekend as the host Cameron for a three-game series starting with a double header on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Cardinals Field.
